Harry Potter and the Perpetual Money Making Wizard

This original YouTube is an Honest Trailer parody that shows the vast and brilliant transmedia storytelling of Harry Potter.

The Harry Potter universe transcends beyond just one media platform. There are films, books, video games, theme parks, and websites that all offer different stories and experiences to the audience. It is one of the most successful and lucrative entertainment franchises in the world, and continues to produce a wide variety of content long after the original material has run its course. Henry Jenkins describes this as media consolidation or “synergy” where the conglomerates with the rights to the franchise, in this case Warner Bros. Studios among others, “hold interests across a range of what were once distinct media industries.” By doing this, the companies have more entry points into the market and therefore increase their revenue streams. If one platform was to fail or close, the rest are there to soften the blow.

I really like the way you made this video and how you’ve used humor to make it more entertaining! Then how you’ve added some info beneath the video about transmedia storytelling which is great to see but I think it could do with a little more information about transmedia and why Harry Potter is an example of it, but overall great post!

This is a very interesting post! I loved the YouTube clip, and the content was both humorous and engaging. Its actually interesting to see the impact of “transmedia” in modern society, and the Harry Potter Series is a prime example. Another case would be Lord of The Rings, they made 3 movies, numerous books, video games, and then expanded their branches even further making 3 Hobbit movies. I thought the way you integrated this example with the themes was excellent and you explained it very well. Great post!

I am a big Harry Potter fan and your satire on this post was definitely humorous! The Harry Potter Franchise is a great example to associate with transmedia. I too was considering referring to Harry Potter in my blog post about transmedia but I don’t think that I would have given it as much justice as you have. I really liked how your post was short and succinct, as it didn’t leave me struggling through an abundance of text. Only thing I could contribute would possibly be mentioning this aspect of the Harry Potter franchise – http://www.powerhousemuseum.com/harrypotter/ – the exhibition’s, and also the numerous collectors cards and wands from various newspapers.
